On Matters Of The Heart

It’s as easy for God to steer a king’s heart for his purposes as it is for him to direct the course of a stream. – Proverbs 22:1 TPT

The way we view our heart, our deepest place, our very core, will dictate how we are influenced by God. The key to being led by the Spirit is acknowledging that you are filled with the Spirit and are a son of God ( see Romans 8:15-17 ). And the same principle applies to the purity of our heart and the ability for it to desire the purposes of God.

What is the heart? Is it not the center of our person? It is not the deep places in us that define who we are? If this is true then we better decide the nature of it.

I have heard this verse quoted many times in order to explain away bad behavior among a believer: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” But how many of us understand that this was written by a guy named Jeremiah, under the old covenant, before the heart circumcision of Christ was available to anyone ( see Jeremiah 17:9 )?

In speaking of the New Covenant, the prophet Ezekiel penned this: “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”- ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭36:26‬

And even Jeremiah himself, talking of the new Covenant, prophesied this: “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭31:33‬

We are those people, who have received Christ and therefore received a new spirit and yes a NEW HEART. It’s actually true that our old self was crucified with Christ so that the body of sin might be brought to nothing ( see Romans 6:6 ).

You can not have the Holy Spirit and an evil heart. It doesn’t work that way. His Holiness burns up and immediately destroys everything that is impure and wrong. In order to house a Holy God, we have to be a Holy Vessel. That only happens by or co-crucifixion, burial and resurrection with Christ.

( Don’t believe what I just said? That’s Awesome! See Galatians 2:20; Romans 6; Colossians 2:9-10; 2 Corinthians 6:14 )

So concerning matters of the heart… we are those that carry the heart of a King. We are captivated by and captivate the very core of King Jesus and that is why our hearts are easily steered by His purposes.

If we choose to believe the lie that our hearts desires are evil, then we will never be easily steered by the heart of Holiness. But if we believe that our hears are His, that we are united as one wth Him… Then our easily-steered hearts will accomplish God’s loving purposes on the earth.

In Dependence Day | Childlike Mindsets

There are only a few more days before the USA celebrates it’s “independence” as a nation. I hope to inspire a revolution of thought towards every person’s absolute dependence upon God. This blog series is a small attempt to push that revolution forward.

If you have spent any amount of time in church you have most likely heard this verse out of Romans:

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” – ‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:2‬ ‭ESV‬‬

It is this transforming of the mind that will allow you to “discern” or see & understand what is the will of God. I believe it is a good, acceptable and perfect thing in the site of Almighty God that we become more aware of our need of Him.

You live in Dependenceville, and you are in need of the Creator every moment. He is your “Abba” – your Daddy God, and this childlike need should remain in your thinking even as you grow into full maturity in Christ.

Children don’t concern themselves with whether or not there will be provision, love or care. They simply experience all that their parents have to offer.

If you are a born again believer, then you are a child of God and have access to all the storehouses of heaven as a co-heir with Christ. Nothing could be more amazing! You are encouraged to seek out the Father like a child does their own Pappa.

So changing the way you think is crucial to becoming more “childlike” and in fact more aware of your dependence. The macho-men out there will say that this is stupid and should be tossed out like a poopy diaper but it does not change the truth of God’s word.

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” – ‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:14-17‬ ‭ESV‬‬

So today I want to encourage you to ask of your Pappa. Ask for what you need or even for what you want as a child would. Changing your mindset requires acting out your new perceptions. Today is your Dependence Day and there should be no shame, fear or guilt in approaching God as your good, good Father.

Be blessed as you seek Him today.

In Dependence Day | Servant Kings & Queens

Continuing in this series on dependence lets look at the leadership or governmental structure of a place I call Dependenceville.

Bill Johnson once said, “We are learning to rule with the heart of a servant, and serve with the heart of a King.”

The government of Dependenceville consists of royals who take the low place and serve the least of these with all the resources of heaven. There are countless examples in scripture and some are given in my book, “Living in Dependenceville” but I would like to take a look at a couple of people in my own life who are mighty Kings and Queens of Dependenceville.

One such couple I know is Jaime and Tami Kent. They lead an organization called NoMore and have a heart to connect the body of Christ with opportunities to serve the least of these.

This amazing couple is on a mission to see hunger, poverty, slavery and other social injustices iradicated through the hands and feet of Christ: the church. They have given their incomes and daily lives over the the idea that if we, the body of Christ, take our place as the ones who love the least of these, then nothing is impossible.

Jaime and Tami inspire me and challenge me to love like Jesus loves and do what the Father is doing. They are one example of a King and a Queen in Dependenceville.

Another couple I would like to point to is Georgian and Winnie Banov, the leaders of Global Celebration. I have personally accompanied them to few couple garbage dumps, multiple refugee camps and served alongside them blessing Widows and Orphans all around the world.

They live out of a place of joy that some only dream of and are amazing Lovers of the poor and broken. They co-labor with Jesus in loving the forgotten and shut out ones. Their ministry to the gypsies and refugees will reverberate for a thousand generations. This King and this Queen have shown me and countless others what it is rule with the heart of a servant and serve with the heart of a King.

The servant-King posture is one you are invited into as a child of God. You love because Christ first loved you.

Take a moment and celebrate your dependence upon God by loving on the homeless and the broken. Do something tangible today for someone who doesn’t deserve it.

“Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.” – ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭11:25‬ ‭

In Dependence Day | Worshipping Warriors

As we march toward our nations celebration of it’s independence, I hope to inspire every believer in Jesus to celebrate their absolute dependence upon Father God. The act of celebrating your dependence upon God is an act of Worship.

As such, the worshippers are the Military in Dependenceville. Just like any good regiment or battalion, there are generals, marching orders and battle plans. The Military of Dependenceville has enlisted heroes such as King David, Jehoshaphat and Jesus Christ Himself.

These warriors are those who respond to every moment, whether turmultous or divine, with thanksgiving. The first response of these worshipping soldiers is giving thanks to the God who gave them their very breath.

Whether it was David vs the Philistines or Jehoshephat vs the men of Moab or Jesus vs all the powers of darkness – one thing remain constant, they worshipped first.

You also can enter every moment with thanksgiving and praise. You can let what you know about God’s unchanging character and worth be your motivation for every moment.

These kinds of worshippers don’t react to the devil, they respond to the Father. They are a John 5:19 generation rising in song and passion.

“So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.” – ‭‭John‬ ‭5:19‬ ‭ESV‬‬

So as an act of celebrating the fact that you are in a place of dependence upon God, I want to encourage you to spend time in praise and worship today. Do it with your family or do it alone but spend time giving Jesus true spirit-filled praise from wherever you are at today.

Let it be honest and let it be full of thanksgiving. Even if you can only thank Him for the breath in your lungs, start there. As you learn to worship first, you will see His peace and strength manifesting in your every day.

It’s a happy day in Dependenceville and you are all invited to the party! Bless you.

In Dependence Day | The Countdown Begins

This will be the first of 4 blog posts counting down to July 4th. As our nation celebrates its “Independence” I hope to call people to a celebration of another kind.

I once heard Georgian Banov say, “All independence is a lie, you can’t even breathe on your own.” I was immediately struck by the statement and began to mediate on it for weeks. It was in this time that the Lord gave me a revelation. I saw the word “independence” break into two parts: “in” & “dependence.”

I suddenly realized that we are all in a place called Dependence and thinking otherwise is foolishness. Every living creature, whether they acknowledge it or not, is reliant on the Creator for every aspect of their life. Everything finds it’s beginning and end in God.

It is like the joke between the scientist and God where the man claims he doesn’t need God because he is so advanced in scientific reason. Both parties agree on a contest to build a sand castle and the challenge begins. As soon as the scientist bends down to start molding and shaping his creation, God stops him and says, “Oh no, use your own dirt.”

This little anecdote reveals the fact that we can not hope to become independent from God in any way shape or form. The very air you are breathing is only in your lungs because it was created by God. Intelligent design requires a designer, and you are completely dependent upon Him for all things.

So in this revelation I wrote a book called “Living In Dependenceville” with the goal to help people become more aware of their dependence upon God and give them permission to celebrate this truth. It is when we move from ignorance, to awareness to celebration that we start to truly experience all that is in the treasure troves of heaven.

So stay tuned for the next couple of days as we unpack a few of the elemental truths that living in Dependenceville can unwrap. I hope you choose to celebrate your day of dependence and unlock the adventure that your life really is.
